So, I’m about to enter my 4th semester as a distance education student. I’ve learned quite a bit during these past couple years, and I thought I’d share some of that with you.
Let me start by saying that my college career got off to a rough start. Simply put, I wasn’t mature enough to handle the responsibility of a distance learning course. I took advantage of the freedom, and never really studied or did the work when I should have. Then, when I saw my grades, reality slapped me in the face.
It didn’t take long for me to realize that I had to shape up if I wanted any chance at getting my adult education degree. So, I talked with a friend of mine who’s getting his counseling degrees online. He gave me some great tips.
The first thing he told me was to make sure to treat it like a real class. In other words, set a schedule for “attending” the class, do homework at the same time every day, and seek help if I didn’t understand the concepts.
The main thing that I had to realize was that this was in fact a real class. Just because I wasn’t attending in person didn’t mean that I could just blow it off. Once I got that through my head and started taking it seriously, my performance improved considerably.
